It’s been a slow news cycle for our coaching vacancies. And while we are waiting to find out who is going to replace Aranda, Brady and Munoz.. for me as a fan, it’s fun to speculate and debate about the rumor mill.

I want to throw out a name: Joe Blaymeir. He is currently the passing game analyst for the Kansas City Chiefs. He honestly hasn’t been in the role long, but he has sat under Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy for the last year. I think that Reid is the best offensive mind of this generation and his coaching tree is incomparable in modern football. Young recruits LOVE Mahomes.. grabbing a guy from the Chiefs would be Gold! The hire fits or scheme and could potentially be lightning in a bottle once again like Brady.

Or even a guy like Mike LaFleur who has been under Kyle Shanahan for the past few years. He would be a much harder sell as he is the passing game coordinator right now. However, Co-Offensive Coordinator is a promotion for both of these guys. LSU has now proven that we can put a coach into a Coordinator position in the League.

Penny of you thoughts?

I like the way you’re thinking. Scooping up more young coaching talent from the NFL may work out again.

Leads me to thinking: if we go down that route again, and the new coordinator(s) prove to be successful, how can LSU proactively put retention measures in place?

Joe and Joe were a perfect storm. Myles has Burrow’s upside, but that doesn’t mean it will translate to 60 tds in the first year with a new coordinator. I think we get them for at least 2 years, likely 3. Joe/Joe combination was an outlier in my opinion.

I think 3 years is plenty to for an OC.. especially if we are in the playoffs 2 of those 3 years.

One big thing is if you are wanting to give a Co-Offensive coordinator title, that means whoever it is would need to work along with Steve. From all accounts, it seemed like Steve and Joe Brady worked extremely well together. That is important. Some people are hard to work with. See Matt Canada.

Retention measures are never fully effective because it's not always about money; therefore you are you are trying to anticipate [changing] motivations. As such, you'll never be that good at it.

So you'll have to do what you can on retention measures but assume they will fail. Hope for the best, plan for the worst mentality. So you also have to put in place knowledge sharing; a "always train your replacement" mentality. In CFB the only effective way to do this by using the analysts and 'shadow staff' roles.

Worth noting that also to do this the idea of 'coaches' has to move away from the idea that it is all wrapped into one persona and into the 'collective' or 'process'. You can't hold on to uber successful assistants. So the idea of your success or system can't be wrapped into that one or two people.

I'll give you evidence of why this is failing, whether or not programs are willing to admit it to themselves or not; it is being forced on them. Programs invested in 'personas' are suffering. Programs who 'name shop' for coaches, are either static or fall further into decline. "Hot Names" are producing hot messes. Modern offenses, and defenses, are too intricate and complicated to be left to 'a guy'. And unlike in the corporate world you are always re-training. Your 'workforce' in CFB has a life span of 3.5 yrs and your best 'workers' have 2 years of experience before they have to produce their best. If that's wrapped into a 'persona' you are doomed to at best middling.

Pretty solid take, and I agree - fun to speculate. If they were looking at Joe Blaymeir, we would not hear anything until after the big game. I'm not worried, but I am a little anxious.

I also think that next season will tell whether the offensive scheme is a novelty depending on how defenses adjust to it with personnel and scheme. For the record, after deep-diving into it I believe it's not a one-year wonder, but I expect to see more copycats, and more of the 3-1-7 that Auburn and Clemson played. We have the benefit of some exceptional talent in the RB spot.
