You couldn't just be normal and give him your license?

He sounds like a typical railroad employee. Fed law gives them total control, and they know it.

Because the police have a nasty tendency to put things involving trains on your record, including driving.

An engineer I worked with smoked a car at a crossing and gave his license to the cop. Guess what happened to his car insurance.

More than once guys have been hauled off to jail for refusing to give information. Sprung within the hour after a brief phone call by the company lawyer.

Again, they have zero jurisdiction.

When I killed the "trespasser", actually suicide, a cop climbed up on my engine. I pointed out to him he had zero authority to do so, but then let it slide. He also asked for my license. He didn't get it either. He didn't put up as much of a fight about it. (Frankly I was kinda hoping that State cop woulda hauled me in. Would have looked even worse for him and I was just sitting around for 12 hours anyway.)

Do you want killing someone on your driving record? When you were not operating a motor vehicle?

Locomotive engineers, and now conductors, are federally certified and carry a card that is very similar to a DL in appearance.
