I liked Nara, but beware that the deer bite and butt. They get VERY aggressive around the food, and depending how big the kid is, he or she may get knocked around a bit. The females were adorable and sweet, but the males were super alpha. Apparently January is during mating season, so it's possible that the males are more docile the rest of the year, but it's something to keep in mind.

There are lots of shops and restaurants down there, too, as well as a gorgeous temple, so plenty to do to kill an afternoon. Plus, if you take the rapid express from Kyoto, it's like a 15 minute train ride. Also, you can buy fresh venison in basically every shop there.
