While his is likely good for the US, I wonder if it is really best for Britain.
Instead of being one of the senior members of a large trade bloc, they basically become an economic client-state of the USA.
Johnson is trying to do to the EU what Trump did to the Chinese: apply leverage.
Trump blew up NAFTA, signed Japan and then came to the table with China. This allowed him to use embargoes more effectively because the other trade deals sustained our economy while they drowned under the weight of our lost contracts. Add in the fact that we have a massive trade imbalance and they already needed us far more than we did them.
If Johnson already has a deal in hand with the US, the relative pressure the EU can apply at the bargaining table is greatly reduced because if a trade war ensues Britain is already stable on other fronts.
Britain isn’t and won’t become a US client state. In fact they were closer to a EU/German client previously and this gives them greater independence all around through triangulation.
Plus you can bet their will be language in the US/UK deal that will be used to strengthen the UKs positions with the EU.
