The OP article was pretty shitty at explaining everything that occurred. There were a couple of key details that were omitted which change quite a bit:

1-The "reference girls" - After reading about that it's pretty easy to make the case of intent to deceive, reliance of the victim on the deception, and damages (aka fraud). IMO this is where they crossed the line of "should have known better".

2-The OP article mentioned sex trafficking, but entirely omitted anything about why that charge was brought, leaving the reader to assume it was basically an overreach. Turns out, there's a little more to it.
