True, but not for those reasons.

Men don't "marry down" because society tells them to choose a female who makes less.

They "marry down" because men are A LOT less picky about the financial/professional qualifications of their mate. They generally prioritize attractiveness and maternal potential.

There's always been a lot more attractive middle-class and lower-class females than attractive upper-class females. That's why we've seen an historical trend of men marrying down, which might be confused as being a "societal" norm.

I would actually argue that marrying across socioeconomic strata is the more modern phenomenon. Socioeconomic boundaries used to be much more strictly regulated by society. That's where the "rich young man falls in love with pretty poor girl" story archetype came from.
