If you have the time, fly direct into Venice and go through Slovenia for a few days on your way to Croatia.

I think Zagreb is a very underrated city. It has a cool vibe, plenty to see and it's not very crowded or overly commercialized.

Like someone else said, Plitvice Lakes are amazing - one of the great natural wonders.

A tip I've heard elsewhere - there is a website that tracks when cruise ships will port along the coast. Cruise traffic has greatly increased there, and due to the size of some of the towns (Split, Dubrovnik, etc) a few cruise ships in town can flood the place with tourists and ruin the experience. Go to the website and try to plan your itinerary around when no cruise ships are docked.

Echo that if it's in scope for the trip (or could be!). My "happy place". We drove up from Plitvice to Ljubljana (Slovenia's capital and largest city) for a few days. Then Lake Bled and Kobarid.

Greatest trip evah.
