Benson got hit with the cheapskate title unfairly. It was actually GM Jim Finks who was the cheapskate that failed to build an offense around the defense Jim Mora put together.
The Saints franchise has been mostly a winning franchise since Benson brought them. The poor management days mostly fell under original owner John Mecom, who didn't have a clue, just like Mike Brown, how to run an NFL franchise. Mecom made poor decision after poor decision.

Just saying what fans of a college team that didn’t follow the Saints may have said, Brod. He did pay up to bring in a big name GM in Finks after all
That said, I’m not sure I agree with your assessment of Finks. He was a great GM that helped build that defense with Mora.
He also tried to draft offense, notably Rueben Mayes, Hilliard, Steve Walsh and others. Sure Walsh didn’t pan out but he was trying.
Plus, cheap skate didn’t really apply back before FA anyway. You had to build through the draft.
