Pretty sure it was grades. I think he was headed for JUCO to eventually make it here but Norvell convinced him to flip to Memphis because he would qualify there and be able to play FBS football right away. AAC entrance standards are a little lower.
It ended up being a good move for him because he was featured in an offense that was perfect for him for three years.
