I find abruptly changing the subject is the most effective way to make a statement, without getting involved, about keeping politics the frick out of christmas conversation.

Made a sign and put in my yard at thanksgiving.
POLITICS FREE ZONE
Violators may be asked to leave. I did it in a playful way but if it came up I had a basis for laying it down.
It worked nicely.
