I agree with you to a certain extent. When I started playing golf I was absolutely terrible (I still am, but that's a different story for another time). I would usually go play with a few people who sucked, like me, just for fun. There were old Marshalls that made playing suck at times. They would follow us around and just sit and watch us. We would let people play through when they caught up to us, so we weren't doing anything wrong. Just trying to enjoy playing. They made it very unwelcoming.

This always pisses me off and it undoubtedly drives people away from the game. It's typically the worst at the public courses where the old marshals feel like they own the place. Instead of presenting a welcoming atmosphere, they go out of their way to follow you around. In my experience it's very rarely the younger inexperienced group that breaks the rules, it's generally the older group that feels entitled to do whatever they want.
