In reading the entire article, the original quote is a bit out of context given the paragraph below that immediately precedes the quote provided in the OP:
In contextual terms, I think he is saying that this is more difficult as his decision to come out would cause problems (divorce) in his family. I don’t read this as his saying that his coming out (as a singular decision) is more difficult. He views the result of his decision as more difficult on his family as he is the one causing the difficulty.
