I don't think countries are supposed to be as big as the US and also 100% democratic and open. The only countries nearly as big as us (i.e. Russia, China) all have significant "drawbacks" that allow the government to operate fluidly and without people rioting because someone said a mean thing. I think we may see a regionalized system (States > Region > Limited Federal Government) before we see full on succession however

Small countries are def. better govern than the big boys. Look at Singapore, New Zealand, Iceland, Netherlands, etc.
