For a given objective diameter this is true. You need to go up in objective diameter as you go up in magnification, all else being equal.
Nothing is more worthless to hunt with than a high magnification, huge scope with shite glass on it. Done that a few times with my buddies rifle wearing a 6-24 (I think) cheap bushnell. It was huge and I couldnt see shite through it once it started getting close to dark. A good scope should enhance your low light visibility, not cripple it.
