So were they expecting a good coach to stay at VCU and not move on to a bigger program? seems to be a very naive way of thinking if so.

From their prospective I think they'd argue VCU IS (or at the point Wade left) was a better basketball program than LSU. When Wade left, VCU had been to the NCAAT seven straight years (and 8 of the last 9 years). To contrast, LSU had been to the NCAAT only ONE time during that 7 year stretch.

There is (generally) much more money and potential opportunity associated with a power conf. school. But I think we'd all agree that you can be a very, very good basketball program without necessarily being in a power conf (see Gonzaga, Wichita St., Villanova, Xavier, St. Mary's, just to name a few). Now (though I'm biased) I think LSU has the POTENTIAL to be a consistent powerhouse program and the resources to make that happen. But I can see their argument Wade left for a "lesser" job. Certainly you can argue none of the guys who left them for "bigger" jobs (Capel, Grant, Smart) have had exceptional success elsewhere.

If you put yourself in their shoes Wade was leaving a clearly good program for a "dead" program in LSU. The thought was why not stay here and try to build on the current success to one day maybe become the next Gonzaga vs. jumping ship to become the next Anthony Grant at Alabama
