Parents were bitching about the weapons and the language. Even in the cartoon after (i think) season four Michelangelo wasn't allowed to use his nunchuck and he went with the grappling hook.
And in Europe they couldn't be called 'ninjas' so they were called the teenage mutant HERO turtles.

That's why it got stupid. The 1st movie felt like a huge upgrade to the brand. The 2nd felt rushed, cartoonish, and watered down
