Should be six, however it should be the six best teams. Top two conference champs get a bye. Next two conference champs get to host in the first round. If you don’t win your conference, you have to go on the road. It puts a team at a huge disadvantage if they don’t win their conference, but it gives them a route to the championship to prove that they might still be the best team.

At the end of the season and the conference championship games, pick the four most deserving teams. If any of these teams have already played, the team that lost is then eliminated and the fifth best team is moved up. This is done so that there is no possibility of a rematch between teams that have already had their shot at one another. Reward the winner of that game and punish the loser of that game. If these teams split because they ended up in their conference championship game then reward the one who won the conference championship. This will, in essence make several regular season games, playoff games. It will make these match ups mean more during the regular season and it will allow for more teams having a shot at making it into the playoffs. It is a way to sort of expand the current setup without actually increasing the number of teams at the end of the season.
