I have a 25-06 and have killed several deer with it. Mine is in a heavy setup (Sako Long Range) and there is zero kick. But would be too much length/weight for a kid. I love to shoot it though. I shoot a 115 grain nosler.
In terms of caliber effectiveness, inside of 200 yards, i’d Put it against anything.
Depending on the models you can find, I think the caliber would be a good choice.
