Is it socially acceptable to request that everyone invited to a wedding is strongly encouraged to wear a suit?

It’s acceptable to request it but what, you gonna send out invitations? Someone sees it in the paper or hears through word of mouth, can’t get a suit together by the end of the day, goes anyway ? What’s wrong with that ?
