Doubtful. More likely it's that Chinese people got pissed that their favorite team all the sudden got banned.
China's huge mistake in letting more Western entertainment come over is that their people really fricking like it and if it suddenly gets yanked they are going to raise hell about it.

Weird history on that front-
Larry Hagman (JR Ewing) was a national hero in Romania due to a mistake by the ruling family, the Ceaucescus.
To explain, communist Romania started broadcasting Dallas in the 1980s because they wanted to use it as an example of how decadent and corrupt westerners were.
It failed because even the poor people on that show had stuff rich people in Romania would kill for, helping contribute to the revolution at the end of the 80s that saw the Ceaucescus executed.
In China’s case, NBA fandom and the Rockets are so conflated thanks to Yao that disappearing them overnight can’t help but be noticed and questioned.
