No. I used a sod cutter to get to dirt and was at about 6" down from existing finished concrete grade. I used a sandy top soil mixture from Lowes to get to about 4" below existing concrete in the center and made a 6"x6" footing around the edges. Also, I did the slab to park my truck on, not as a patio.

I think it was 20'x12' so I split it into 4 areas with expansion joints too.
