It was more difficult to hit a driver consistently back in the day.
Many courses were fairly short compared to today so I used 3 wood off the tee almost routinely.
A big par 5 use to be 500 yards. A big par 4 maybe 415 or so.

McGregor's and old Hogans are real persimmon.
I use to own a Wood Brothers Big Tex driverwhich was beautiful.
