Just to clarify the rule on the review and 10 second run off

I’ve seen some people on here asking why Dallas didn’t have a 10 second run off after the review late in the fourth. When it happened I thought the exact same thing but I looked up the rule. The only way a 10 second run off would happen is if it was incomplete and then overturned to a completion. Since it was a completion and not reversed, there is no 10 second run off. I think it’s stupid considering it gave Dallas basically a free timeout. But by NFL rules they actually did get it right.

Well they had to check that play. It was too close not to. And they waited to blow the whistle until right before the ball was snapped, which was the right thing to do so that the Cowboys didn't get any extra time.

Meh, they got to to think about their next play without worrying about a running clock and be 100% set before the clock was run again. They were able to snap the ball before any time ran off the clock. They absolutely benefited from the review.

Sure, but it was close. The ball was moving. They had to review it.

They were set already before they stopped it for review. Agreed that they were able to put more thought into the next play than they likely would have, but I'll take that tradeoff for the possibility of that catch being ruled incomplete and having them backed up.

Dallas used all their timeouts on our previous drive.

Okay, I can accept that, but why did they run off (and fricked that up) the clock during the Texans game? They did not overturn anything, but ran off 10 seconds (well 35, but who’s counting?).

They overturned the spot if the ball giving us a first down didn’t they?

In the Texans game they called it incomplete on the field and then overturned it. Since it was called incomplete no clock ran. But the bigger issue with the Texans game is the 16 seconds that disappeared in that process.

I believe you are correct. We were hurrying up to sneak it.

This. It would have been 4th and 12 from their own 12. I'll let them talk about it all day if there's even a small chance that Cooper didn't catch that ball.

quote:100% wrong. It was never ruled incomplete, it was ruled complete and the time continued to run off the clock until the review. The review was to determine if it was 1st down or 4th down, so your explanation that the clock runoff only happens if you reverse an incompletion to a completion does not apply to the Texans game either. Something is not correct in that explanation of the rule, or the refs got it even more wrong than they admitted in the original league acknowledgement. Here's a link to the play in question:

correct... the overturn against Houston re-spotted the ball and turned it from 4th & 1 to 1st & 10
the 1 thing this review did do was essentially save the Cowboys from having to spike the ball to stop the clock... so it essentially gave them an extra down... since the clock stopped long enough for them to discuss what play to call next without everyone having to rush to the LOS
