The problem is not with the party, it's with 'opportunism' on the part of the candidates. The voters are libertarian but the candidates (after Harry Browne) did not come up through the party. They failed to advance in the GOP (think Bob Barr) and saw it as a chance to get in the game.
The same thing happened with the Green Party. It's supposed to be the party of environmentalism. But they nominated Ralph Nader. He has ZERO to do with the Green movement. He's a class warrior liberal. He's the male version of Eliz. Warren.
Same with that black woman they nominated in 2016.
