Best tip I can give from my experience in Italy in general is to wonder away from the parts that are obviously choked with tourists until you're at the point where everyone around you seems to be speaking Italian. The food will be far better and far cheaper. Learn some basic phrases for ordering food. Learning to say "per favore" and "grazie" will go a long way.
