Friends and family could meet you at the gate, you didn't have to arrive 2 hours early... it was vastly easier than it is today.
You could go to an airport and just go from gate to gate if you so desired. Not sure why you would, but you could if you wanted to.

For the most part, this is correct. However, during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the airports had heightened security and for a few months and only passengers could go to the gate.
