No, you're right. Ohio State was better than Florida State that year. However, FSU clearly had the better resume.

Defeated a Texas A&M team that won the Big 12 and finished the regular season ranked in the top 10

Defeated a top 25 Miami team in the Orange Bowl

Defeated a Georgia Tech team that finished ranked #12 in the final regular season AP poll 34-7 on the road

Defeated a Virginia team that finished ranked #13 in the final regular season AP poll 45-14

Defeated a Florida team that finished ranked #7 in the final regular season AP poll 23-12

FSU beat two top 15 teams by 27 and 31 points. They beat a top 10 team in Florida by double digits and also beat a top 10 team that won their conference in Texas A&M. OTOH, Ohio State beat no top 10 teams, only one team that finished the regular season ranked in the top 15 (Michigan), and two teams who were barely ranked inside the top 25 (Penn State and Missouri). I don't see how a case could be made that Ohio State had a better resume than Florida State. You would have to be really biased towards Ohio State to believe that.

Well, Ohio State beat that same Texas A&M team in the Sugar Bowl. All of their wins were by double digits and they had a 28-9 lead in the game they lost before one of the most bizzare shanked punt turnovers ever.

They beat #7 at the time Penn State 28-9 and number 8 Texas A&M 24-14. They also had wins over ranked West Virginia on the road, #21 Missouri and #11 Michigan.

Florida State also got throttled by NC State.

FSU had 2 wins over teams that finished top 10 in the BCS, one being an extra regular season game at Giants Stadium. Ohio State had 0.
