Sometimes if you deplane and leave, they just book you on the next available flight or just refund your ticket.
Might not offer hotel compensation or vouchers until after flight is cancelled.
Depends on the customer service rep and airline.
If they were going to Miami, sounds more like vacation type people so probably booked their flights at lowest cost possible. A refund would have ended their vacation.

I would get off the plane counting on the fact they wouldn't do a damn thing, beyond a refund.
Airlines don't have to do anything and generally, they don't.
