I came across ATL versus LA Galaxy and watched a while.

ATL is up 3-0 at 85 minutes and the Galaxy players just keep taking the ball back to their end and kicking it to their goalie.

Help me understand.

Well down 3-0 at 85 minutes I wouldn’t really be attacking either to be fair.

Ok. That makes sense. That’s packing it in.

It seems like they’d given up at that point. Zlatan didn’t play for the Galaxy today, and without him their attack has been hopeless for the last two seasons.

But generally teams pass backwards when they are pressured or if they see no obvious way to play forward through their opponent’s defensive lines. They hope to draw some opponents out of position and create better passing lanes.

Sometimes in soccer you’ll see a team play a bunch of backwards and sideways passes in a row for a long period of time. Then suddenly they see an opportunity to pass forward, and before you know it, they’re creating a good goal-scoring opportunity. Generally that is achieved by “overloading” an area of the field to outnumber the defending team, then using that advantage to push forward with quick passes before the defending team can adjust.

You pass backward to move forward... if you pin yourself too deep, and are being pressured, you work it back to reset the attack with more space.

I play soccer. I know how soccer works. I was just making a joke about going down 3-0 in the 85th minute. It’s not a good feeling.

When losing with not much time, a team that wants to win will get more direct.

England was doing that same thing in their World Cup loss.
