Linklater grew up in Huntsville (TX). There are a few people there who have a legitimate claim to that. One in particular wasn't real happy about people thinking that he's who Wooderson was based on.

But it's not like it's based on any specific event. Linklater just wanted to make a movie about what high school was really like: driving around bored, trying to get some beer, getting tickets for the big concert...etc. Basically, the exact opposite of all those "coming of age" melodramas about high school life in the 80's.
