He wasn't really off the grid though. I mean with a helicopter he owns he is all of 2 hours away from miami, 60 minute flights each direction.

Most private pilots aren't on call 24 hours a day, but I wouldn't doubt that whenever Cline was at his Bahamas place his pilot was basically on call or at least he had a helicopter on call. Billionaires are a little different, but most guys with private jets/ pilots will often share them with others if they have maintenance or pilot issues on their own.

ETA: Its pretty normal for private planes to return to their home base after dropping off the owner unless its a long way away. Its easier and cheaper to have the plane/ helicopter and pilot return to its home then to keep all the crap there to secure, refuel, etc. on site on the island. Plus you have to house the pilot/ crew. Etc.
