Any tips for Atlantic City?

Was looking to go for a weekend this summer and was surprised at how pricey the casino hotels are. Is it necessary to stay in one of them or can I stay somewhere close by? Also, is everything (casinos, nightlife, beach) all within walking distance of each other? Looking to go to the beach, bars and casinos. Thanks!

beach has tons of shells. only 2 options to stay. hard rock or borgota NOTHING ELSE.
