Beppu is onsen ground zero-but it’s a bit garish. I would recommend taking the children to Miyako- machi ( wild monkeys) and the Seven Hells (Jigoku). Google the latter.
Also Mt Aso ( volcano). Also google Yufuin , which is an upscale onsen city. You MUST go to an onsen- it’s quintessentially authentic Japan in a way most gaijin never experience the country.
Also learning basic phrases in Japanese is as easy as any language. VERY easy for native English speakers. Let me know if you have any questions.

Caldera in which you can raft out of to saltwater about 30 miles away.
