There are fewer conflict points (areas where one driving motion would result in a crash with another driving motion), and the crossing distance for left turns is significantly lessened so you can get more people turning left in a shorter amount of time. So less traffic backup waiting to turn. Plenty of other things too.

Correct, the idea is to get traffic flowing from a previous point to that more cars can make left hand turns without conflicting points.
