This board isn’t quite small government. The fact is many people only want to protect speech that they agree with.

Has nothing to do with big government, has a lot to do with the significance of the flag and constitutional interpretation, if SCOTUS really wanted to make a 1st Amendment statement relating to flag-burning, they'd have rendered a unanimous opinion in Texas v. Johnson, they didn't 4 justices dissented INCLUDING noted liberal Justice Stevens and noted moderate Justice O'Connor. A "plain meaning" interpretation (textualist) of "speech" represents the oral production of words, period, point-blank.
