1) The West with their scheme to drive a wedge between the world's 2 largest Communist regimes by bringing China into it's fold.

2)Greed. 900 million nearly Homogeneous Chinese to exploit / sell their goods vs less than 300 million Soviets.


3) Chinese were less militiristic than the Soviets with no serious ambitions beyond their borders/ Pacific( outside of trade) . No nukes in Cuba,etc....


4)Those Pandas were too damn cute. Awwww.


Now Americans are angry / envious at this economic miracle that has turned a nation of Communist peasants into an economic power / largest manufacturing hub that the planet Earth has ever seen.
