I can go either way, but In that position when both hitters are rather even, you start down the check list on each and Mendoza’s strikeouts stand out. 50% of the time Mendoza won’t even put the ball in play, he will either walk or strike out. Then there’s another 25% chance he is retired via a ball put in play.

Extremely tough decision for PM. He played the odds & lost. Easy to second guess now.

Plenty of us were second guessing as it happened. Mendoza was more likely to hurt you than Martin. I’ve never heard a coach specifically justify throwing to a batter with the intention of a K
