Case law?
I understand that it was a shitty situation. And that officer has no business in law enforcement. I agree he deserves ridicule and is liable civilly.
But from a criminal standpoint, I dont think it follows the law.

It was a shitty situation. His duty was to protect those kids. Court case wise, the USSC says he has no responsibility to defend those kids. Criminally, I would think malfeasance in office(he's sworn in as a LEO), dereliction of duty, criminal negligence could all be brought up. I'm not a lawyer though.
