Steam Link or Nvidia Shield?

I already have media devices so that part of Shield doesn't appeal to me.
My main thing is I want to be able to play my Steam games (only 1 or 2) on a TV. I have a laptop w/ GTX 960M so I could use Gamestream.
Has anybody tried both?
Also, if I am understanding this right, it looks like you may not need a Steam Link. All I would need is a controller and I could download the app onto my AppleTV and play off of my PC. Is this right?

The Steam link absolutely sucked when I bought it. I got it through the 2018 summer sale for $1.99 so I can't complain too much, but hardly any of my games functioned properly through the Steam link. Most of them didn't have Steam link support at all. Save your money on the Steam Link.
I don't know a thing about Nvidia shield, but it doesn't have much to beat.

I love my steam link. Most times I use it simply to remote into my PC from my bedroom to play N64 emulators, but I've never had a problem with Steam games, mostly Golf Club, Worms, and Borderlands

When I posted this I didn't realize that the link was discontinued. Cheapest I found was $60 online.
Since then I found out that they came out with an app. Seems like it replaces the link. I tried it out last night and was impressed. I was able to play Skyrim on my couch using just my controller and viewing on an ipad. I tested it on my appletv and same results.
I've read where people have sideloaded it onto their firesticks with similar results. I will try that one day too.

I'm always amazed how bad people can be using their tech. Usually so bad they push the issues off on something that worked nearly flawlessly since launch in 2015.
But what issues really. It is an endpoint dummy device that just decodes like your Chromecast. Does a little more with compatibility but really that is all. It's less than a thin client really.
The Shield is a media device. The Steam Link is not. They aren't used for the same purposes outside that you can stream games to the Shield link the Steam Link.
