An election is just about the worst idea they could have come up with.
This is a kingdom that has a serious problem with corruption, lawlessness, and political violence.
An elective system makes assassination more likely, and you’d see serious uncertainty whenever a king died. Will the factions abide by the results? Or will they go to war to take what they want?
Odds are, they won’t accept the results of an election. Why should they? On a personal level, it’s probably a plotters only chance to be king. And as families, they may not have another chance for twenty or more years. They stand to lose, a lot.
A hereditary system would be more stable, most of the time.
