As you weigh all these wonderful things you think these tariffs will accomplish you should be honest with yourself about the negative things.
We have been in a trade war with China
We have been for years.
Over the past two decades, China was eating our lunch by hook or crook. In dealing with the Chinese autocracy, we emulated hopeful pacifism of past failures.
Essentially we were testing Einstein's definition of insanity --- doing the same thing again, yet expecting a different result. It was reminiscent of the Allied Powers' approach in the mid/late 1930s. Peace-in-our-time, Japan-is-no-threat, etc. In the face of totalitarian aggression whether military, trade, espionage, etc., we damn well know how well pacifism works --- It NEVER works in such an instance! EVER!
Yet that is the approach you suggest.
So on these matters when you attempt to sarcastically critique what "I think," do it with the advantage of knowing my response in advance. Know that I'll reliably parry by forcing you to weigh other "wonderful things" such as concomitant Chinese goals, as well as US costs of China's achieving them.
What would those costs be?
