Well that too. We would have just blockaded the Japanese.

But there’s also the consideration that Japan lasts longer than they did in our timeline. The guilty secret is the Japanese saw what the Soviets were doing to the Chinese and the Koreans and wanted none of that. I think the most rational argument against nuking Japan is that they were going to surrender anyway just to get the Americans protection from the Soviets.
