Honestly, I'm just a little disheartened that the SEC record is going to be in Starkville now moreso than any sentimentality I have with Furniss holding the record.

Yes but Mangum has absolutely earned it. Currently .399/.451/.521 with 20 SBs for the season. Imagine where LSU would be if Duplantis could have put up a season like that...

Although Duplantis' .826 OPS is actually the highest of his career (.823/.758/.824 the first 3) so it's not like he's really having a down year. He just traded some hits for some more extra base hits.

Mangum is having a big year, but over the course of his career he just doesn't come close to measuring up to Furniss. Furniss drew lots of walks. Mangum really doesn't, very much. Furniss had tons of power. Mangum doesn't really have any. And for as much speed as Mangum has, he hasn't stolen nearly enough bases. It's just a shame to see a great player like Furniss get his record broken by a guy who has largely been one dimensional. But, it is what it is now.

Duplantis first three seasons: 89, 90, and 89 hits a year with a combined BA of .323.

Duplantis 2018: .321 with 76 hits and LSU has at least 4 more games.

He has been a little more streaky this year than his previous three seasons where he was just steady but he hasn’t really tailed off that much he just added some power.
