You can scare a lot of things off with a rock or a stick... If OP believes that the coyotes are an ongoing problem, then long term, he should either leave them be or look to actually take them down... the middle ground is just training them that they have little/nothing to fear.
Thus my qualification... "if you feel it's necessary"
Personally, would just leave them alone unless they are getting particularly bold/interested in my children.
