I raised all of my children to be polite and respectful. I did not however raise them to say ma'am and sir because I travel a lot and it is not the norm outside of the south. All of my children travel/have lived abroad/didn't stay in the south so I am glad it is not a habit for them. I grew up with it as a habit and had to break it for my career so I did not think it was important to make my children do it.

what career negativity would arise from using those manners? Do you ever feel resentful for feeling the need to abandon a non-offensive cultural norm that you were raised to value?
