Joe would have been reluctant to fire O because doing so would have essentially been an admission of fault. It would have been the 3rd major HC he hired that failed (Trent Johnson and Johnny Jones being the first two).
The new AD bears no responsibility for O being the HC. Thus, if he feels someone else would be better suited to run the program he will have no hesitation to make the move. So yes, O's job security is lessened with the "firing" of Alleva.
