People always clap on international flights. I figured it was to celebrate arrival in a new land, not a congrats to the pilot.

This. I've flown between European countries probably about 50-60 times, can't recall a flight they didn't clap at the end. Only had it happen a couple of times in the states, usually in big vacation hubs like Vegas.
