I dont know how the facilities are for the players in New Orleans, but that had to be a major reason Houston left to go across the country to Fresno.
This is not how it happened. The Astros moved their AAA affiliate to Round Rock, Texas in 2000 when the contract ended. Affiliate contracts are two year deals. After 2000, Houston moved the affiliate partly because Round Rock was a new franchise and was owned by Nolan Ryan.
That move made sense for the Astros, but it destroyed or started the destruction process for the Zephyrs. The team was still decent and the ball park still new then, but were then affiliated with the Nationals, followed by the Mets.
THEN the Mets pulled out and we got stuck with Florida and now can not get rid of them. It has been a disaster with the exception of Giancarlo Stanton parking one out on Airline Highway in the Marlins-Zephyrs exhibition a few years ago.
