Parity and variance are very high in the NHL, which is why upsets in the NHL playoffs are so much more common than other sports.

The NHL playoff format rewards teams with a streaky goalie that is peaking at the right time.

The playoffs are littered with lower seeds that outperform postseason expectations, because their goalie drops their GAA a goal and a half from the regular season.
