A Mary Sue can also be a character that seems inserted into the story that has traits of the author. For instance, many see Samwell Tarly in ASOIAF as a Mary Sue for George R.R. Martin. Pudgy, bookish kid who seems useless at first and will likely save the day or have a major role in doing so. Difference is the character is written well and isn’t just good at everything right off the bat.

Sam is far from a Marty Stu.
He has people that like him people that hate him.
He has a lot to learn. He isn't good at everything and he has tons of faults.
The closest thing to a self insert Marty Stu Martin has is The Great and Powerful Turtle. And even he spends half the time getting his asskicked/fricks up/ or can't go on the fantastic space quest because he has issues.
